Lamppost Banners for Acton BID, 2025
Lamppost Banners for Acton BID, 2025
Installed · August 2025
Acton BID commissioned JG Contemporary to bring a little extra colour to the town centre’s lampposts. The result is a series of street banners designed by artist Tasia Graham.
The brief came from the BID’s new initiative to work with local artists and designers. It asked for designs that celebrate Acton’s community spirit and welcoming character, use bold, bright colour that reads from a distance, and hold together as a series along a street. They also had to work in a tall, narrow format, with the BID’s logo at the foot of each banner.
Tasia responded with three designs, all drawn with strong black outlines and flat blocks of colour. In one, a park bandstand sits among rounded trees beside a pond. In another, a tower block rises out of a meadow of oversized flowers and acorns. The third is a swirling pattern of acorns, leaves and ribbons of colour. All three share one palette of orange, blue, green, purple and red, so they read as a family when they hang side by side.
On the street, the banners do what the brief asked. Hung from the lampposts above the town’s hanging baskets, they read clearly from a distance. One acorn banner hangs in front of Fin DAC’s Shisoka mural on Myrtle Road.
The brief asked for clean lines and shapes over fine detail, because a banner is seen in passing and has to catch the eye in a second. Tasia, whose colour and pattern work for us includes the Midland Terrace playground mural for OPDC, brought the same boldness to a very different format.
