Catherine Eldridge received a scholarship to study a Diploma in Painting from the Florence Academy of Art (2012-2015) and studied Fine Art at Leeds Univerisity (2005-2008). Working from a combination of life and photography, she creates sculptures, scenes and still lifes in her studio which form the basis for her oil paintings. Her technique draws on influences from throughout art history, which she combines with surreal subject matter as the foundation of her practice. The artist lives and works in London.
Cloaked study I & II are the first works to be shown from a new series created by the artist in, as she describes, an increasingly obscured world. The paintings express a feeling of blindness to political, social and environmental realities and the impact of external influences on our senses. Inspired in part by Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, the artist explores the psychological barriers to reality and our relationships with truth and fiction.
