Echoes: a joint exhibition by Tim Bret-Day & Henry Woolway

"Echoes" - A Unique Collaboration at JG Contemporary

We are absolutely thrilled to announce the upcoming exhibition, "Echoes," a unique collaboration between renowned photographer Tim Bret-Day and artist Henry Woolway. The opening reception for "Echoes" will coincide with the June edition of our Last Thursdays at JGC, taking place on June 29th, from 6-9pm at JG Contemporary.

Tim Bret-Day, predominantly celebrated for his vibrant colour photography, has also spent his career capturing more intimate moments in a timeless, monochrome style. His black and white prints, spanning a decade from 1988 to 1998, are some of his most memorable images. These individual frames serve to immortalise personal memories. For Tim, the process of printing an image from the negative film is a journey into the unknown. It's a fleeting moment when the final narrative's outcome is still undefined, adding a layer of mystery and anticipation to his work.

Upon encountering Henry Woolway's black and white abstract paintings, Tim felt an immediate connection. Both being locals to the gallery, their paths were destined to cross. Woolway's artistry plays with the suspense of the reveal, much like early glass plate Daguerreotypes. His pieces, structured yet filled with hidden textures, gradually unfold a narrative initially invisible. The absence of colour in Woolway's work is replaced by the texture and layering of black onto the base canvas, creating a before and after effect from two distinct artistic fields.

Their joint project, 'Echoes', is more than just an exhibition. It's an exploration of emotions, an examination of our initial impressions versus our perceptions upon closer scrutiny. It's about what moves us, what we see at first glance compared to studying something or someone. The 'Echoes' of our past reverberate into our future, creating a unique, spontaneous exhibition concept that intertwines their storytelling journeys.

The first exhibition of Woolway's work that Bret-Day attended at JG Contemporary deeply resonated with him. Serendipitously, they decided to exhibit together and initiate a series of future collaborations. Henry's recurring themes of lost and rediscovered memories perfectly complement Tim's photographs for 'Echoes', which evoke the sensation of semi-lucid dreams.

We invite you to join us at JG Contemporary to experience 'Echoes', a journey into the past and a projection into the future through the lens of two extraordinary artists. This is a unique opportunity to delve into the minds of two creative powerhouses and explore the echoes of their past as they reverberate into the future.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting collaboration.
